10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!

Really, when you have a cross-dressing pirate Princess in one story, a vampire banker in another and a Austro-Hungarian spy who can see Supernatural Beasties, there are some pretty weird situations all around. And yet, George, my vampire, insists his weirdest moment is being forced into a luxury bubble bath and then a rhinestone-cowboy outfit by his werewolf boyfriend sidekick. He's such a dull-loving character ;)

9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.

There's really no set way. A good example is Maximilian, my 16th century Austro-Hungarian psychic spy. He originally germinated from the loose idea for a father of a canon character in a fanfiction. I got curious about quite why he was the way he was and suddenly, he exploded from simply a deceased father who left bitter, cold widow, into this fantastically messed-up, complex psychic yet extremely religious character who resented the very abilities that kept him at the top of his game. And who deeply loved and was deeply loved by his wife, though they never, ever said it to one another.

I really need to sit down and work on his story some more.

But yes - they tend to show up intact. Sometimes in stps and starts, but the whole character is usually there and I just have to wait for all the details and traits to be revealed :)

8. What's your favorite genre to write? To read?

Given I'm currently writing a satire, a historical supernatural spy thriller and a contemporary vampire novel, I like to think I'm varied. But with a strong inclination towards fantasy. Not high fantasy, though. I like my fantasy with a side of snark. Or historical fiction. I loves me some historical fiction. funnily enough, my taste in reading and writing is fairly similar.

7. Do you listen to music while you write? What kind? Are there any songs you like to relate/apply to your characters?

Not really, since I like to write in silence, which is why I was so productive in computer labs. Occasionally, I'll have a soundtrack or plain old classical music piece on, but for the most part, gimme quiet and my brain does the rest.

6. Where are you most comfortable writing? At what time of day? Computer or good ol' pen and paper?

My computer desk in my room, ideally, but I tend to write wherever I am when inspiration strikes. Most infamously, I wrote about 300,000 words of a single series while I was actually at class in college. Likewise, a million+ words of fanfic while I was at uni, getting a degree. I do wonder how well I could have done if I'd actually made an effort, instead of just bluffing my way to a 2.1.

I used to handwrite a lot more, especially at uni when I had no computer of my own and the labs insisted on kicking me out occasionally, but now, it's not unless I'm travelling and even then, it's usually only short snippets.

5. By age, who is your youngest character? Oldest? How about “youngest” and “oldest” in terms of when you created them?

*pokes through 'em* Technically, it's Pirate Princess and her cohorts, since most of the rest of them have grown up, although I have had baby characters in the past. Oldest is one of my Deaths, this one specifically being the first Death for humankind.

Writing-wise, George is my oldest character. He first showed up in around 2001, when an original bunny bit off the back of a BtVS story. It took me nearly 7 years to find a good voice for his side-kick and actually write his story. Youngest would be Molly, who decided that she wanted a cameo in the pirate story and now, insists she's integral to the plot and wants to be a ninja. Minor characters with attitudes are... special.

4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!

The one I most clearly remember was a story for school, when I was around 9 years old. We were doing a project on Ancient Egypt, and we had to write a day in the life of an Egyptian. Everyone else chose priests and princesses, so I went to the other end of the spectrum and picked the slave girl who was punished for not doing all her chores, and who was very fond of the cats which lurked about. She had epic tragic backstory, which the Princess found very amusing, especially the whole abducted-from-family saga. My teacher went o.0 and told me I had an overactive imagination ;) I don't know what gave me away.

3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?

Mostly, the characters produce their own names along with their identities. Sometimes, I have to wait for it to come along, but usually, they bring them.

As for places, those are trickier, especially in pirate-story. It's the first time I've done a whole new universe and it's taking a while for all the places to get their names. I'm really showing how very British I am with the placenames, though. Silly cultural heritage ;)

2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?

Ahahahahaha. This is like asking "so, how many grains of sand are on that beach?". I have a lot. I have 3 books-in-progress, each of which has at least 5 central characters in varying roles, to say nothing of the background characters currently fighting it out for prequel/sequel rights.

On top of this, I have various other original babies who currently only see the light of day in a role play, and there are at minimum 40 of them. Some of these have stepped sideways into potential novelettes of their own. I even have a comic strip I'm working on featuring historical characters. While not my own, they are my own spin on said historical figures.

So yes. Lots.

1. Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you've worked with and why.

Right this second? My Pirate Princess story. It came about from a loose plot bunny about 'what if a pirate's daughter was put in Rapunzel's tower instead..." and kind of expanded. The world is still being tweaked, but I've not been as inspired as I am now for a long time. It's turned out to be far too much fun, and the characters I hadn't expected to be as significant really are. Plus, there's cunning disguises, swordplay and cross-dressing. What's not to love?
